Quirks of Fate

Quirks of fate

Cannonball strikes
A resolute citadel with no fortress
Picturesque but gullible
Eclipsing lofty lights
Coercing defenseless warriors
To drop their arms
And push up daisies

Unsightly leprechaun
Sitting at a rainbow’s end
Unappealingly wrapping
Such amusing hue
A pot of gold,
Deceptively seeking trust
To the naïve and oblivious

An undeclared language
Of words unpleasantly genial
Spoken but devoid of meaning
Expansive as written verse
Hiding behind imagery
Subversive but sympathetic
As it longs to be heard.

A learned man
Feigns to be foolish
While flattering the wisdom of others
Reproached to be devious
All the while teaching
That to question in perpetuity
Is knowledge acquired?

Like a pendulum
The paradox persists
Swinging back and forth
Unswerving against time
And every time it comes
It is spelled differently.
The irony remains
Peculiarly familiar.
