An Athletic Tragedy

An Athletic Tragedy

And off he went.
He took off as if a caliber had detonated
To commence a race.
Bang.
He tucked the pigskin against his side,
And he ran the field like a spooked deer.
His sight was set from a vision not too far,
While the rest of his senses were impeded.
It was clear to him
That he need not hear or feel anything.
For he understood that all that mattered
Was getting there.
He was a robust machine of a man,
His huge physique launched instantly
Lifting himself off the ground.
His feet latched onto the mud,
Propelling him effortlessly.
One could hear his step from miles.

He was swift.
He shifted side to side,
While he pushed off defenders from all sides.
He jumped through some of them,
As if they were hurdles,
Leaving a track of dirt,
Like an earthmover went through it.
He was undisputedly the best competitor
Anyone had ever seen.
A highly regarded player
From a prestigious institute.
He won dozens of awards and accolades
From various competitions during his youth.

Then as if the sun went dark at noon,
A guileful rival attacked from behind.
It was purely performed ordinarily,
And yet his speed decelerated immediately.
No exceptional or foul play was expended,
Yet it was adequate enough
To halt his imposing power.
Then as if it was done in slow motion,
Down he went, eating dust.
He succumbed to the field.
He slithered through grit and grass
While he quickly diminished in earth haze.

The crowd was motionless, just as he was.
His formidable strength enfeebled.
And as he stared at the sky,
His passion moved stealthily out of his body.
He started feeling every inch of pain
Like he never had before.
A broken leg and fragmented rib,
Slowly depleted his soul,
Consuming his humanity.

Men rushed towards him,
Even opponents came to aid the fallen competitor.
They carried him out of the field.
As the crowd roared in optimism.

Weeks went on and his health improved.
He was then able to walk,
Yet his supreme ability was no longer there.
And as months continued, it became clear
That he would not make a return.

Years had passed & he succumbed
Deeper into sadness,
He surrendered his all to addiction & abuse.
Attempting wrongfully to ease the pain.
Eventually, he lost all of his possessions.
And ultimately, he lost
The most prized possession of them all,
His family.
One by one, they left him.
And on one fateful night,
Perversity and irresponsibility ruled over.
He took his own life,
Tragically without anyone in sight.

“People come, people go,” one journalist said.
“All good things come to an end,” added another.
Everyone should hear this,
For it rings true to each one of us.
All experiences will eventually be over,
Whether they’re good or bad.
His athletic prowess may now be
A distant memory,
But let it serve as a reminder that,
While he lived through it,
All of us should do the same.
But we MUST continue the fight,
To wherever it may lead.
Combatting adversity and trials
That have been brought forth our way.
For it isn’t important where one comes from.
All that counts is where one is headed.

Blissful Doubt

Blissful Doubt

He was mortified.
For he had been lost by his time.
A time of numerous choices
And instant delight.
He has cossetted his soul in naive needs.
The deities he had made,
Ruled over all his days.

He was mortified.
For he had been lost by his society.
A society where freedom only meant
To choose what is greatly admired,
To take what is easy and comfortable.
Freedom never meant anguish and distress.
Even if it was virtuous and right.

He was mortified.
For he had been lost
By his intellectual peers.
Peers who believed that only the sensible
And pragmatic facts mattered.
His belief was seen as feebleness.
A pathetic plea from a frail individual.

On unsteady ground he stood.
Yet he was never pleased at his disbelief.
For he’s summoned unceasingly,
By the awe-inspiring genius
And the overwhelming mastermind
In the harmony of earth and sky.
The rising of the sun to its falling
And the life that breathed within its realm.
He’s summoned
By the imposing meaning of his presence.
As he journeyed life trying to understand
The diverging degrees of excellence.
This disbeliever knew in his heart,
That he need not be nor shall he live forever.
He knew who is faultless,
From the one who isn’t.

He was mortified.
Yet this time,
He was crushed from one definite reason.
His incredulity is anything but dishonest.
And this was the beginning of his conviction.
A blissful doubt which led him to be certain,
That providence works in mysterious ways.

Along Came Sandy

10/30/12
1:03 am
Brooklyn NY

Along came Sandy

When Sandy threw
Her dander and rage
All trees were swept
And waters took stage

The winds blew men
And boats aside
She set fire to homes
As flames spread wide

The rivers engulfed
Both tunnel and rail
Most roads have sunk
Some homes set sail

Scores of citizens
Both young and old
Have suffered amply
Her wrath, untold

Then, Sandy left unnoticed
Darkness, we now claim
This woeful path of ruin
Will always bear her name

Coincidences

Coincidences

Life happens inadvertently.
A mind blowing premise,
As life in itself means existence.
Yet life is unconscious and uninformed.
No wise man can surely foretell,
If tomorrow would come.
We’re mostly unprepared for the unknown.
And the unknown will almost never prepare us
Even if we had an indication of what it might be.

Yet there are days where accidents happen.
Somehow our whims converge with reality,
And our yearnings become accurate.
The randomness of time seems to propose a plan.
Contrasting events seemed to unite,
As if we have organized the improbability of our dreams.

Some people believe coincidences are inconsequential.
I consider them profound, insightful to the soul.
I happen to believe these little flukes are significant in our lives.
They somehow give us a glimpse to the unknown.
A veritable intuition to what may come.
Aren’t these the days we feel more alive?
We feel as if the higher beings have come down to us!
Desiring the unlikely to happen more frequently.

I say, go ahead.
Find your coincidence.
Better yet, let it find you.

Double Proposition

Double Proposition

Today I swept the river waters.
My arms struck its resistance,
Paddling persistently,
Impelling my boat forward.
Drops from my brow cooled me off,
As I pummeled its flow.

I was never quite convinced,
That I knew where I was headed.
I'm only certain I need to keep paddling.
Paddling meant everything.
And everything is all I’ve got.

As I neared the fork,
Two routes came into view.
One to my left and another to my right.
Both seemed to be of equal value.
It’s likeness stood out,
More than I could decide.
As I approached the split,
I halted my boat.
I knew enough, that whichever way I go,
It would change everything incessantly.
Yet my mind was still undetermined.
And so I yielded.
Floating in uncertainty.

Stealthily, the current guided me towards the left.
Coercing me to stir with the stream.
I knew then where I need to go.
For inherently, the current couldn’t have gone any other way
And perhaps, that’s where I need to be.

Paddling on,
I looked back to where I once was.
The river waters were in constant unrest.
Unpredictably choosing where it flows.

I guess I’ll always wonder,
What it would be like to go to the right.
